About the Australian Embassy in Iran
Australia and Iran maintain diplomatic relations. Australia first opened an Embassy in Tehran in 1968.
In August 2025, Australia suspended the operations of its Embassy in Tehran. The suspension affects the Embassy’s normal physical operations and its ability to provide services inside Iran.
Australia continues to engage Iran through diplomatic channels on issues including regional affairs, human rights, immigration and consular matters.
Head of Mission: the current Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade listings retain the position of Australian Ambassador to Iran but do not currently publish a named Ambassador. A name is therefore not listed here.
