About the Australian Embassy in Japan
The Australian Embassy in Tokyo is Australia’s resident diplomatic mission in Japan and represents the Australian Government in its official relationship with Japan.
The Embassy supports the Australia-Japan relationship across foreign policy, security, defence, trade, investment, education, science, culture and strong people-to-people links.
Australia maintains two principal diplomatic and consular posts in Japan: the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and the Australian Consulate-General in Osaka.

Consular assistance
Australians facing serious difficulties in Japan can seek consular assistance in accordance with the Australian Government’s Consular Services Charter.
Australian passports
Eligible adult passport renewals and eligible child renewals can be lodged by mail. Applications requiring personal attendance are accepted by appointment.
Notarial services
The Embassy provides eligible Australian notarial and document legalisation services. Postal service is available within Japan for eligible services, while in-person services require an appointment.
Visa and citizenship enquiries: the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and Australian Consulate-General in Osaka cannot provide advice about Australian visas, immigration or citizenship. These matters are handled by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Appointments at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo
An appointment is required for in-person consular, passport and notarial services at the Australian Embassy in Tokyo.
The Embassy asks visitors to arrive no earlier than 15 minutes before their appointment and to avoid bringing people who are not required to attend.
Due to high demand and limited in-person appointment availability, the Embassy encourages applicants to use postal passport and notarial services wherever they are eligible to do so.
If you require both passport and notarial services, contact the Consular Section rather than making multiple separate appointments.
One appointment only: the Embassy asks clients not to make multiple bookings. Duplicate appointments may be cancelled.

Passport and notarial responsibilities in Japan are divided between the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and the Australian Consulate-General in Osaka. Applicants using in-person services should approach the office responsible for the prefecture where they live.

Tokyo’s jurisdiction includes Aichi, Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Fukui, Fukushima, Gifu, Gunma, Hokkaido, Ibaraki, Ishikawa, Iwate, Kanagawa, Mie, Miyagi, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama, Shizuoka, Tochigi, Tokyo, Toyama, Yamagata and Yamanashi.
Australian Consulate-General Osaka
Australians living outside the Tokyo jurisdiction should check whether the Australian Consulate-General in Osaka is the appropriate office for their passport or notarial service before arranging an appointment or mailing documents.
Postal applications: passport and notarial applications submitted by mail should also be sent to the Australian office responsible for the applicant’s prefecture.
