About the Australian Embassy in Spain
The Australian Embassy in Madrid is Australia’s resident diplomatic mission to the Kingdom of Spain.
The Embassy represents the Australian Government and supports Australia’s relationship with Spain across diplomacy, trade, investment, security, culture and people-to-people links.
The Embassy is also responsible for Australia’s diplomatic relations with Andorra and Equatorial Guinea.
Australia’s Ambassador to Spain is Ms Rosemary Morris-Castico.

Consular assistance
Australians living in or travelling through Spain, Andorra or Equatorial Guinea can contact the Embassy for consular assistance in accordance with the Australian Government’s Consular Services Charter.
Australian passports
The Embassy processes Australian passport applications. Eligible adult renewal applications can be submitted by registered post or courier, while applications requiring an interview must be lodged in person.
Notarial services
The Embassy provides eligible notarial services including Apostilles, certified copies, signature witnessing, affidavits and Certificates of No Impediment to Marriage.
Visa and immigration matters: the Australian Embassy in Madrid and Australia’s Consulate in Barcelona do not perform Australian visa functions. Visa, immigration and citizenship matters are administered by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

Passport interviews and notarial services requiring personal attendance must be booked in advance through the Embassy’s appointment system.
Before booking a passport interview, complete the appropriate Australian passport application and check which supporting documents and photographs you must bring.
Before booking a notarial appointment, confirm exactly which notarial act is required by the authority receiving your document.
Adult passport renewals: eligible PC7 adult renewal applications can be submitted to the Passport Office in Madrid by registered post or courier without an in-person appointment.

Barcelona: Australia maintains a Consulate in Barcelona headed by an Honorary Consul. Notarial acts are not provided there and must be arranged through the Australian Embassy in Madrid.

Before visiting the Australian Embassy
Check whether your passport or notarial matter can be handled by post, book an appointment where personal attendance is required and prepare all necessary documents.
Check passport eligibility
Eligible PC7 adult passport renewals can be submitted by registered post or courier. Do not send your current or expired passport or other original documents with an eligible PC7 postal renewal.
Book when required
New adult passport applications and other applications requiring an interview must be lodged in person. Book your passport appointment before attending the Embassy.
Prepare for payment
Passport and consular fees are payable in euros by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card. Cash payments are not accepted.
Passport processing: allow at least six weeks for an ordinary Australian passport application. Some applications may be completed sooner, but the Embassy cannot guarantee processing in less than six weeks.
Priority processing: expedited passport processing is not available for applications lodged overseas.
Emergency passports: an emergency passport may be available in eligible urgent circumstances, including where an Australian travelling in Spain has lost or damaged a passport or needs to travel urgently after a passport has expired or is about to expire. Contact the Embassy to discuss your circumstances.
Notarial services: notarial acts are provided only by the Australian Embassy in Madrid. Personal attendance and an appointment are required for services such as signature witnessing, while some services including eligible Apostilles can also be handled by registered mail or courier.
